The best days out

Words from Gerard O’Sullivan, Association Chair

So here we are, on the cusp of 2025. I hope you’ve enjoyed time with your loved ones over Christmas, and that you’re looking forward to the year ahead.

To paraphrase the advice of Dr Radha back in our spring issue, this time of year can be an opportunity to reflect, review and, if necessary, reset. For many of us, it’s also when we plan our holidays – January is the busiest time for bookings. And with that in mind, this issue is focused on travel in its many guises, from short escapes to once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I hope it will inspire you and provide some useful tips.

I already have some plans in my own diary. I’ve got a week in the Lake District, ‘farm-sitting’ for a friend in Wasdale – a new experience for me! I’m also looking forward to my annual sojourn to Kerry in south-west Ireland – it’s where I hail from.

Travel, as we all know, does us a lot of good: challenging our comfort zones, experiencing new places and cultures, nourishing the soul. I am, though, more aware than ever before of the impact travel and mass tourism can have on the environment. While I very much enjoy my cars, I try to travel by train for longer journeys where I can to help minimise that environmental impact. If that strikes a chord with you, I hope you’ll find our slow travel feature (page 60) and responsible travel guide (page 98) both interesting and useful.

In other features, we travel to Northern Ireland with some rookie motorhomers, and take a spa break in Bournemouth. And if you’re looking for a big-ticket holiday this year, we’ve got you covered with some exciting ideas for bucket-list trips.

Whatever your plans, I believe our club can help you make 2025 a joyful and fulfilling year by inspiring you to make the very most of your leisure time. And however you choose to spend it, I wish you the very best. Enjoy the issue
