We’re all going on a summer holiday
Words from Gerard O’Sullivan, Association Chair
As you pick up this issue from your doormat, the world’s athletes – and Europe’s footballers – will be limbering up for a huge summer of sport. With the Euros kicking off on 14 June in Germany, and the Olympics beginning in Paris on 26 July, there’s plenty of inspiration to get out and stretch your own legs – although perhaps at a more leisurely pace.
For starters, how about a stroll around the 600 miles of paths and trails on the sunny Isle of Wight (see page 44)? Not all of them, of course, unless you’re feeling Olympic-fit. Upping the pace slightly, although not by much, we explore life on the canals, swapping the quiet splutter of an engine for the clip-clop of hooves (page 68). Shifting up a few gears, turn to page 52 to join us on a speedy road trip through Emilia-Romagna, in search of Italy’s heart and soul.
Whatever takes your fancy this summer, the chances are you’ll be doing some of it with family. With multi-generational breaks on the rise, we look into the world of ‘3G’ holidays, and how to split costs and save on group trips. All that, plus our regular guides to the UK’s best days out, places to go, things to do and people to see – including a colourful cast of historical re-enactors – and advice on everything from the latest cars to saving money.
