1. Scare yourself silly

“In space, no one can hear you scream.” That was the tagline of the first Alien film when it hit the big screen back in 1979. Well, people will definitely be able to hear you scream at the cinema – and we reckon you’ll be doing a lot of that if you go to see the seventh instalment of the sci-fi horror franchise, Alien: Romulus, when it’s released on 16 August. Directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe), the movie is set between the events of Alien and its sequel, Aliens (1986), focusing on a group of young colonists who get more than they bargain for when they start exploring a derelict space station. Gripping and entirely terrifying, it’s sure to deliver visceral thrills galore.

Boundless offer: As a member, you can get up to 37% off cinema tickets, as well as discounts on snacks and drinks, through The Cinema Society

2. Follow the yellow brick road

The Wizard of Oz has been enchanting audiences for decades – and the magic of this iconic musical doesn’t look like wearing off any time soon. Indeed, Dorothy Gale and her friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion will be skipping back to London’s West End for a four-week run this summer (Gillian Lynne Theatre, 15 August – 8 September). This version of the show sees perennial favourites such as ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead’ augmented by catchy new songs written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. With colourful scenery and a wealth of stage talent on display – including JLS star Aston Merrygold as the Tin Man – you won’t want to return home.

As well as attending specially organised events in your local area – the official website recommends contacting your local pub or brewery to see what’s on – you could celebrate the occasion by booking a brewery tour or tasting session. There are lots to choose from on the Virgin Experience Days website, so why not treat a friend or loved one to some beery, cheery fun.

On this day each year, people across the UK are encouraged to put down their electronic device and pick up a book. It doesn’t matter if it’s a novel, a non-fiction book or a compilation of short stories – if it keeps you from scrolling for a few hours, then the initiative has done its job. Buying a book needn’t cost a lot of money, either – with your Boundless membership, you can make great savings on all the latest titles

Boundless offer: Members can get discounts on National Book Tokens, which can be used at hundreds of stores. You can also join the Boundless Reading Room, where members discuss their favourite tomes past and present.
