There’s a stunning free light show happening this month – right above your head! The Geminid meteor shower is set to illuminate the sky throughout December, but your best chance of witnessing this dazzling display is on the 14th and 15th (providing it’s not cloudy). Wrap up warm, grab a reclining chair and head to the darkest location you can find – then simply wait for the magic to unfold.

What better way to express your gratitude than with a gift that keeps on giving? At these family workshops, held at WWT London, kids can get creative by crafting thank you cards made from seeded paper – a card today, beautiful wildflowers tomorrow! There’ll also be the chance to create a gift for nature, whether it’s a pinecone feeder or a bug hotel.

Enjoy a day of festive family fun

Time Travel Club: Festive Fun Day, 9 December, London

Christmas origami

Soak up the Christmas spirit at The National Archives’ festive fun day, where a whole host of drop-in activities await the entire family. Craft your own origami decorations under the guidance of artist Toshiko Kurata, enjoy live Christmas carols, and be transformed into a reindeer, elf or holly princess with face paint. There will also be plenty of tasty goodies on hand to keep your tummy from rumbling.


Catch a Christmas concert

Fab-YULE-ous Voices, 9 December, London

Treat your ears to a medley of merry melodies at this annual showcase of local choirs, held at London’s Southbank Centre. The festivities kick off with a performance from the Centre’s very own Youth Voices choir, before some of London’s best amateur ensembles take to the stage. The event carries on into the evening, but you’re free to come and go as you please – a perfect break from the chaos of Christmas shopping.

For a well-deserved moment of calm amid the holiday hustle and bustle, drop into this tranquil multi-sensory workshop at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Artist Tyreis Holder will help you create your own aromatherapy pouch with dried flowers, fruits and essential oils. Breathe in the calming fragrances, and relax…


Watch an unusual swimming race

Everyone has their favourite festive traditions, but a dip in near-freezing waters is certainly one of the most peculiar! Since 1854, that’s how members of the Serpentine Swimming Club have kicked off their Christmas morning, embarking on a race across Hyde Park’s famous lake. Although you have to be a member to take part, you can cheer on these plucky swimmers from the sidelines. It’s guaranteed to make you feel warmer!

Celebrate the reopening of a much-loved venue

After five long years, iconic venue the Bristol Beacon finally reopens this month – and you’re invited to celebrate! To mark the occasion, they’re throwing a massive, free party. Every corner of the new-look venue will come alive, thanks to a diverse line-up of over 60 acts – from music and dance embracing a myriad of genres, to poetry, kids’ activities and more. No tickets are needed; the doors will stay open until the early hours, so you can join the party whenever you like.

Walk with a Warden – Wintering Ducks & Waders, 16 December, Llanelli

As you explore the site with a friendly expert, you'll learn how to spot different species and discover tracks left behind in the mud. The Star of Bethlehem was said to have guided the Three Wise Men to the birthplace of Jesus over 2,000 years ago – but was it real, and how might it have led them to Bethlehem? This month marks the 10th anniversary of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. Stretching across the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water and Forest Park, it’s been awarded Gold Tier status for its pristine skies, which offer unparalleled stargazing experiences. Head to Malton’s picturesque Market Place for the Yorkshire town’s most magical shopping weekend of the year. Discover a whole host of festive food and gift stalls to a soundtrack of merry tunes performed by live brass bands and choirs. Entrance is free, although keeping your purse in your pocket may be challenging!

Manchester Festive Sundays, 3, 10 & 17 December, Manchester

Manchester Festive Sundays

Manchester’s Christmas markets are open daily over the festive season, but for an extra-special experience, visit on one of the city’s three Festive Sundays. On 3 December, the spectacular Christmas parade is set to be even bigger and better than last year's event, which captivated thousands. Then, on 10 and 17 December, St Ann’s Square will come alive with a procession of larger-than-life toys – meet sugar plum fairies, toy soldiers and a sparkly fairy mouse!


Take a walk on the wild side

Wild Walk: Wonderful Woodland Birds, 9 December, Sunderland

Not sure how to tell your willow tit from your coal tit? Join this one-hour walk at WWT Washington, where you’ll hone your skills in distinguishing bird species. You can then put your newfound ID skills to the test by observing the array of woodland birds that visit the feeding station. You’ll also discover ways you can attract wildlife to your own garden.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Belfast City Hall, this Christmas market boasts one of the most picturesque locations of them all. Although you’ll have to pay for your mulled wines, hog roasts or a spin on the beloved vintage carousel, it’s totally free to simply mooch around the stalls and soak up the magical Christmas atmosphere.


Indulge in festive nostalgia

Take a festive trip into the past at this film screening and talk, held at the National Library of Scotland. Curator Ann Cameron will show a selection of films from the library’s moving-image archive, revealing the unique stories behind them. Expect Christmas shopping tips from the Co-op, family memories of Christmas morning, and some crazy crafting. You’re guaranteed to leave feeling all warm and fuzzy.

Hear the tales of a tank commander

One Man and His War with Tim Purbrick, 14 December, online

Lieutenant Colonel Tim Purbrick served as a tank commander in the first Gulf War, which saw Kuwait liberated from occupying Iraqi forces in 1991. In tonight’s online event – exclusive to Boundless members – Tim recounts his experiences as a tank troop leader fighting an unpredictable enemy in this desert landscape, an operation he describes as “the fastest and longest cavalry charge in history”.
